Who Controls the Weather?

tornadoIf you asked the average person in America who controls the weather, you would probably get many different answers. Some would say Mother Nature, others would say global warming, you might even have some say the weather man. How many would actually say God? In our modern world, we have come to believe science over God. Even if we believe in God, we don’t actually believe that He concerns Himself with the affairs of men.

A Deist is someone who believes that “God does not intervene with the functioning of the natural world but rather allows it to function according to the laws of nature” (Wikipedia). Even though many in America do not call themselves Deist, in actuality this is what they are. They believe in God, but do not believe he controls the weather, earthquakes or hurricanes. With a major draught occurring in California and floods in Texas, we need to understand what the Bible has to say about the weather. Does God control the weather? Does God send His judgments through weather?

Let’s take a look at some verses in the Bible to help us understand who controls the weather

Verses on Rain
“He gives rain on the earth And sends water on the fields, Job 5:10 (NASB)

“He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; Who makes lightnings for the rain, Who brings forth the wind from His treasuries” Psalm 135:7 (NASB).

Does God send His judgments through weather?
“Also with moisture He loads the thick cloud; He disperses the cloud of His lightning. It changes direction, turning around by His guidance, That it may do whatever He commands it on the face of the inhabited earth. Whether for correction, or for His world, or for lovingkindness, He causes it to happen. Listen to this, O Job, Stand and consider the wonders of God” Job 37:11-14 (NASB).

“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail, which I have reserved for the time of distress, for the day of war and battle?” Job 38:22-23 (NASB).

“Furthermore, I withheld the rain from you while there were still three months until harvest. Then I would send rain on one city and on another city I would not send rain; one part would be rained on, while the part not rained on would dry up. So two or three cities would stagger to another city to drink water, but would not be satisfied; yet you have not returned to Me,” declares the Lord Amos 4:7-8 (NASB).

“If a calamity occurs in a city has not the LORD done it?” Amos 3:6 (NASB).

America is under God’s judgment whether you want to believe it or not. Unbelief does not negate reality. Not only is God judging America through the weather, but we are being threatened by our enemies daily, and riots are going on in our cities. Read Amos 4 to see the different judgments God sent to Israel to try to get their attention. The only judgment that worked for Israel was captivity. What will it take for America to listen? God has sent 3 blood moons over the past 18 months, with one yet to come. Many believe that this is a joke as well. If we won’t listen to Him through the weather or through the blood moons, what more will it take?
