It is time for our COFFEE DEVOTION in Phil. 3:12-21. Do you feel like singing “You are my Sunshine” this morning? If not, grab a cup of coffee or hot tea as we learn how to have JOY from the book of Philippians. I hope you have your Bible and journal handy. You will want to right your answers down so you can meditate on them later.
We are going to look at a key JOY verse this morning. Let’s read our passage first:
- Read Phil. 3:12-21
- What does the apostle Paul do with his past in verse 13?
- What does he do in verse 14?
- What type of attitude should we have according to verses 15-16?
- How are we to walk according to verses 17? How should we not walk (verses 18-19)
- Where is our citizenship?
The apostle Paul teaches us how to have JOY in the book of Philippians. One key to living a JOYFUL life is letting go of the past. We have to forgive those who have wronged us. We also have to forgive ourselves for past mistakes. If you are holding a grudge against someone, then go to them and make it right if possible (Matt. 5:23-24). Unforgiveness is a JOY killer. It turns into bitterness if left unchecked for too long. Are you holding any grudges in your heart? Why not ask the Lord if there is anyone you need to go to and ask for forgiveness. Holding on to the grudge will only rob you of your JOY. In areas of abuse, you might not be able to go to the person, but you can still forgive them in your heart. If you have deep emotional hurts, you might need to find a Christian counselor or mentor to help you work through these emotions.
Another JOY killer is having the wrong attitude. Is your mind set on earthly things or things from above? Do you have difficulty forgetting things people have done to you? Are you a negative person, always finding the worst in every situation? Do you think you are better than everyone else? Perhaps you think you are beneath everyone else. Sulking is just as much a JOY killer as pride. When we compare ourselves to others, we will never be satisfied. This will rob us of JOY. Decide today that you are going to change your attitude towards life and others. Seek out friends who have positive attitudes. Having the right type of friends will give us JOY rather than sorrow. Our citizenship is in heaven if we are a believer. We will never be satisfied with things on this earth. Let go of your past and look to your HOPE in the future. Our HOPE and JOY can only be found in Christ Jesus.
Ask the Lord in prayer to help you forget your past, forgive those who have hurt you and find Godly friends. Pray for joy unspeakable and full of glory.
