How to Prepare for Rosh Hashanah

shofar

Today is September 8, 2015, however, if you follow the Jewish calendar it is Elul 24, 5775. The month of Elul is a time of repentance for the Jews to prepare themselves for the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year.

Does Elul  have any significance for believers in Christ?

Elul means search. To celebrate the month of Elul, a trumpet is blown every morning from Elul 2nd until Elul 28th. This trumpet blast is a call to repentance or a time to search your heart. It is a wake up call for those who are spiritually asleep. Not only is this the time to repent, but one is also required to make restitution to others. If you have wronged someone throughout the year, then you must make it right with this person before God will forgive you. Does this sound familiar? Listen to the words of Jesus:

“Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift” Matthew 5:23-24 (NKJV).

Prepare Your Heart

During these last few days of the month of Elul, it is time to prepare your heart. Not only should you confess every known sin to the Lord, but you also need to mend every broken relationship. I believe we are living in the last days, so there is no time to lose. Christians need to live holy lives so the lost will see something different in us. Does the world need your type of Christianity? If not, then it is time to get right with the Lord. The shofar is blowing (click here to hear a shofar blowing) and Jesus is calling us to repentance. Here is a sin list to help you confess your sins to the Lord: Sin List from A-Z.

Feasts

Sometimes I believe that Christians have missed out by not celebrating the Feasts of the Lord. They point to Jesus Christ’s crucifixion (Passover), Burial and Resurrection (Feast of First Fruits).  They call us to repentance (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur) and they point us living with Jesus during the Millennial Reign (Feast of Tabernacles). Paul says they are shadows of things to come in Col. 2:16-17.

The Trumpet is Calling

I am reminded of the old hymn, When the Roll is Called Up Yonder sung by Twila Paris. The trumpet of the Lord is sounding for salvation and repentance. It is time for Revival and Spiritual Awakening for America. When the final trumpet of the Lord sounds to call us to heaven, will you be there? Will your friends and family be there? Will your neighbors be there? It is time to quit playing games. The party will eventually end, so we must be about our father’s business. It is time to seek and save the lost while the Lord is still calling.
