The Christianity Test Part 5 – 1 John 2:15-29

Bible and Pencil 2 copy

Welcome back to our study on 1st John. We will finish up chapter 2 so we can begin chapter 3 next week. Thank you for persevering through this study in the summer time. There are many other things you could be doing, but you have chosen to spend time with the Lord in Bible study. Remember what Jesus told Martha, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her” Luke 10:41-42 (NASB). So many people are caught up in the pride of life that they don’t take time to sit at the feet of Jesus. It is only at the feet of Jesus that we will get true rest for the soul.

Instructionsnotes

  1. Read through 1 John 2:15-27.
  2. Mark with one of your highlighters the Purpose of John’s Writing
  3. Mark verses for the Genuine Christian
  4. Mark verses for the Counterfeit Christian. The picture, which is not actually 1 John 2, is an example of how to mark your text.
  5. Print out The Christianity Test Chapters 1 and 2

Do you love the world? “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” 1 John 2:15-17 (NKJV).

As we read these verses, we need to ask ourselves what loving the world means. Is John saying that we should hate the planet earth (world), the flowers and animals? No, the love of the world is loving the ways of the world. God doesn’t want us to continuously strive for worldly desires such as fame and fortune. He might bless us with wealth, but we should be content even if He does not.

When we die, we cannot take the things of the world with us. Our spirits are made to live for eternity either in heaven or hell. We spend so much time on earth, trying to acquire things, but spend little time living our lives for eternity. This life is only a dot on a line drawn to infinity. Our lives are the only thing on earth that are eternal. Our relationships with people can impact eternity, but our possessions will burn.

How many people will be in heaven as a result of your witness to them?  I hope that you will put deep thought into what I have just said. Many people are so wrapped up in themselves, that they don’t have time for friends. Life is all about themselves and their family.

Where will your neighbors spend eternity? Will they spend eternity in heaven or hell and do you care? I know this seems harsh, but John reminds us in verse 18 that “it is the last hour”. Time is running out and too many people are busy running to and fro. As Kirk Cameron says on an episode of “The Way of the Master”, “We have to seek and save the lost while there is still time”. As verse 17 says, “The world is passing away, but he who does the will of God abides forever. We must be about our Father’s will.

Who are the antichrists? Now we will move on to verses 18-19. John warns us that the Antichrist is coming and many antichrists have come. These smaller antichrists are false teachers. There are many of on Christian television and preaching in churches today. We have to know the Word of God so we can recognize a false teacher. These people have very charismatic personalities and want you to send them money. They promise that if you send them money, then God will bless you. They know how to entice you with their flowery words and empty promises.

The Christianity Test

Genuine Christian

  • “And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” 1 John 2:17 (NKJV).
  • “He who acknowledges the Son has the Father also” 1 John 2:23 (NKJV).
  • “Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father” 1 John 2:24 (NKJV).
  • “And this is the promise that He has promised us–eternal life” 1 John 2:25 (NKJV).
  • “If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him” 1 John 2:29 (NKJV).

Counterfeit Christian

  • “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” 1 John 2:15 (NKJV).

  • “For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–is not of the Father but is of the world” 1 John 2:16 (NKJV).
  • “And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” 1 John 2:17 (NKJV).
  • “They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us” 1 John 2:19 (NKJV).
  • “Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son” 1 John 2:22 (NKJV).
  • “Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either” 1 John 2:23 (NKJV).

My goodness! John is really meddling in our affairs today. If any of this sounds familiar to you, then perhaps either you or someone you know needs to take the Christianity Test. I am not trying to be judgmental, because I do not know who is saved or not saved. Only the Holy Spirit can tell someone whether or not they are saved. But I can say all of this with sincerity, because I was a Counterfeit Christian at one time. I said the “sinner’s prayer” at 5 years of age, but realized at 16 that this was not a genuine decision. I looked like a Christian on the outside for all practical purposes, but on the inside I was dirty with sin and needed cleansing from the blood of Jesus. I am afraid that many in our churches might be suffering from the same problem as I was. If you have doubts about your salvation, then pray about this. Before I was 16, I doubted my salvation all the time, but since my genuine conversion I have never doubted.

What does the word abide mean in 1 John 2:24-29?

I want you to mark the word abide in a distinct way every time you see it in these verses. The Greek word for abide in these verses is meno, which means to stay, abide, remain, continue, dwell. I recommend checking out a website called Bible Hub.

You can look up any Greek word in the New Testament, however, you need to make sure you find the appropriate Greek word for the verse you are using. There are several Greek words for the word abide. The best way to look up a word is to actually use Google. I typed into Google “the Greek word for abide in 1 John” and then clicked on the Bible Hub website. You will be directed to a page giving you the Greek word meno, using several different Bible study sources.

What abides in us as believers and what are we to abide in? In verse 24, John tells us to “let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning”. What we have heard comes from the Bible so the word of God is to abide, continue and remain in us. The only way this can happen is to study the word of God. In verse 26 John gives us another reason for writing this letter. He wants to warn the believers about those who are trying to deceive them. He then tells us that the anointing, which is the Holy Spirit, abides in us. So not only is the word of God to abide in us, but we also have the Holy Spirit abiding in us. The Holy Spirit will then teach us all things, if we listen to Him. This will keep us from being deceived by false teachers. Not only does the Holy Spirit abide in us, but we are to abide in Jesus. Therefore in verse 28, we are to abide in Him (Jesus) so we have confidence and will not be shamed when He comes again.

Congratulations, you have finished studying the first two chapters of 1 John. Here is a copy of the 3 lists we are making: Purpose of Writing, Counterfeit Christian and Genuine Christian. I will continue to add to this list for the remainder of our study.
