Fasting Friday – Media Fast

Fasting Friday Checklistfarmer's market 2

  • Have you prayed this morning?
  • Have you meditated on the Word of God?
  • Have you worked on your weekly memory verse?
  • By the way, if you are doing some type of diet, it is recommended to weigh only one time a week. Why not make Fasting Friday your weigh in day?

How in the world are we supposed to do all these things every single day? I realize that we all have busy lives. I hope that you will take some time for reflection during this month of Spiritual Renewal to see if you are spending your time wisely? God has determined a specific amount of time that we will live on this earth. We have the same hours in the day as Jesus and Paul did. When we die will God say, “Well done my good and faithful servant”, or will he say, “You wasted most of the time I gave to you”. Many of the above tasks can be done while you are doing something else. You can memorize your Bible verse while eating breakfast or lunch and exercise while praying. However, I do recommend a quiet time of prayer everyday. If you work, you can memorize the verse or pray while commuting. If you pray while exercising and have a daily quiet time, you will receive a double reward. If we stay home more rather than shop, we will save money and have more time for Spiritual Renewal.  I promise you that you can fit these disciplines into your schedule whether you are a stay-at-home mom, house-bound or you work. Be creative and the Lord will free up some time for you to do these things. Now for the topic at hand: fasting.

Choose a Fast

The purpose of a fast is to do without food so you can focus on the Lord. I have done many different types of fasts over the past few years and my favorite are the long term fasts. If you have never tried a 40 day Daniel Fast, then try it sometime. You will not regret it. I have never felt closer to the Lord than when doing this type of fast. However, much time is spent thinking about meals and food prep because of the menu requirements. If you would like to learn more about a Daniel fast, then check out my post, “Word Study Wednesday, Daniel Fast”. I would like to encourage you to try a Diet Fast this month. It is easier than a Daniel Fast because you don’t have specific foods you are required to eat. You are only restricted to the amount of calories per day. Take a look at my diet fast, “Diet Fast”. The reason I like a diet fast is because it helps me to lose weight under the power of the Holy Spirt. When doing a fast, you will have strong power from the Holy Spirit to help you stick to the fast. What better way to lose weight, than through the power of the Holy Spirit? His power is much stronger than your own willpower.

Media Fast

After selecting the type of fast or diet you would like to do, you may wish to consider a media fast. I know this is not scriptural, but I am sure that Jesus and Paul would not have sat around all day playing video games, watching TV and spending time on Facebook. Even though the disciples did not have a media fast, they did say, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word” Acts 6:2-4. If you wish to have power from the Holy Spirit, then I hope you will consider the things that I have said. Once you experience a deeper Christian walk and the satisfaction it brings, you will never want to go back to being an average Christian. You will wonder why you didn’t try it sooner.
