Memory Verse Monday – Verse on Fasting

Today’s Memory Verse is:

 “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” Matt 17:21 (NKJV)

Welcome to Memory Verse Monday! Come, pull up a chair and relax for a little while. I have been wanting to memorize scripture for a long time, but I can’t seem to get organized enough to do it. I thought that it would be a great idea to work it into my blog. Perhaps this will help you as well. If you don’t like the verse I have chosen, then find one you would like to memorize  and work on it this week. Put this verse on a 3×5 card and carry it with you wherever you go.

The month of August has become a time of spiritual renewal for me. It used to be September, but with schools beginning earlier, I have switched this month to August. This is the start of the new school year, time to begin my new Bible study after taking a summer break and time for promotion Sunday in church Sunday Schools. This time of year is more of a renewal to me than the actual New Year. During this time I usually try some type of long term fast. I have done 21 day Daniel Fasts, diet fasts or even just staying away from a particular food. This is why I have dedicated this month to fasting. You may choose to fast if you wish or you can just visit my sight to learn more about fasting. On Friday, I will talk a little more about the different types of fasts.

You may wonder why I have chosen this particular verse as the first verse to memorize. I have not spoken much on spiritual warfare on my blog so why this verse? If you have decided to pray for revival and spiritual awakening for America, you have entered a spiritual battle whether you realize it or not. If you have never thought much about Satan’s existence up until this point, you may start to realize that he is alive and well. Satan and his demons will allow Christians to do many things without interference, but he gets upset when you begin to pray. If you want to be effective in the spiritual battle of prayer, you must learn how to fast.

Happy Memorizing! If you are like me, you will have to dust away the cobwebs in your brain in order to do this, but it is worth it. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, he quoted scripture. He didn’t tell Satan, wait one minute while I look this verse up. He knew it from memory. Scripture is powerful in prayer to the Lord and powerful against the enemy. If the Word (or the sword) is our defensive weapon, then we must know it from memory to use it wisely.
