This begins part 5 of my series on praying the Lord’s Prayer. Please see parts 1-4 to learn more about how to pray using this prayer.
Today we will look at verse twelve, “and forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors” Matt 6:12 (NKJV). This is a very important verse to remember. We have to forgive others or God will not forgive us. This is a scary thought. If Christ died on the cross to cover all of our sins, no matter what the sin is, we have no right to have unforgiveness towards another. By God’s grace He forgave us and when He forgives us the Bible says that He forgets the sin. We should do the same for others. Unforgivenss causes a root of bitterness to begin growing in our hearts. This bitterness can pour into every aspect of our lives. It causes us to hold a grudge toward people we love, it breaks up marriages and it destroys relationships. When our hearts are full of bitterness, we can lash out in anger toward our children, spouse or anyone we love. Even if they are not the target of our bitterness. Unforgiveness can cause our prayers to not be answered, “and whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses” Mark 11:25-26 (NKJV).
When I am using the Lord’s Prayer as an outline for prayer, I use verse 12 as my time of confession of all known sin. The Bible says, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me” Psalm 66:18. We cannot afford to harbor any sin in our hearts, whether it be unforgiveness, lying, bitterness, theft or jealousy. I have a sin list, which I like to use during my time of confession to the Lord. You can find it here: Sin List from A-Z. Please do not skip over this time of confession, because you may hinder your prayer from being answered.
Here is an overview of what we have learned so far:
- Verse 9 – Praise
- Verse 10 – Intercession for others, pray according to will of Lord
- Verse 11 – Petitions – praying for our needs
- Verse 12 – Confession
Tomorrow will be the end of my series on the Lord’s Prayer.
