Gay Marriage Legalized? What Should Christians Do?

church atlantaOn Friday, June 26, 2015 many Americans were shocked as the Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage. If you are a Christian, as I am you probably wondered how this could possibly happen in America. America used to be known as the birthplace of revivals. We have had many Great Awakenings in this nation, so how can we now be a nation where the majority accept gay marriage?

After I heard the announcement on gay marriage, my mind immediately thought of Romans 1:18-32. I am not going to write about my opinion. It does not matter what my opinion of this court decision is, but it only matters what God has to say. You might be surprised at what I am about to say. God allowed this court decision to happen on Friday. Our nation has been under judgment for sometime, even if Christians fail to realize it. This loss in freedom for Christians was allowed by God. God is bringing judgment to this nation. His judgment begins with the house of the Lord. “For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?” 1 Peter 4:17 (NASB). Now, let’s take a closer look at Romans 1:18-32, because there are consequences to sin.

When people fail to honor God or give thanks to Him, when they become futile in their thoughts and their hearts are darkened, God gives them over to the lusts of their hearts. The phrase, “God gave them over” appears 3 times in this passage. When people exchange the truth for a lie, God gives them over to their lustful passions. Homosexuality happens as a result of God giving people over to a depraved mind. Many people will think this is harsh, but God said it. This is not the only sin which occurs when God gives people or a nation over. Here is a list of sins in verses 29-30:

“being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality,[a] wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving,[b] unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them” Romans 1:29-32 (NKJV).

We see all these sins increasing in America at an alarming rate. We should be concerned with more than homosexuality. What about those who are proud, disobedient to parents, unloving and unforgiving? These are sins which are happening in the church. Homosexuality is an abomination to the Lord, but so are proud eyes, a lying tongue, murder, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, a false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers (Proverbs 6:16-19). Are you a Christian who is taking a stand against homosexuality? You had better get your heart right. The Bible has much to say about hypocrisy. In fact, let’s continue with Romans 2:1-3.

“Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?” Romans 2:1-3 (NKJV).

The church in America has lost her respect in America, because many of us are hypocrites. How can we preach against sin, when our lives are full of sin?  Many people will read this verse and say we should not judge them for their sin. In a way they are right. God will judge sin. But what this verse really means is that it is wrong to preach against sin, when you are sinning yourself.

This weekend, a friend of mine asked me this question “What are we supposed to do as Christians over this court ruling”? I will tell you what the Bible says to do about this court decision.

  1. Get the plank out of your eye. You cannot preach against sin, if you have sin in your life.
“You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye” Matthew 7:5 (NIV).
  2. Preach the Word (All of it!). Share the gospel message.
“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction” 2 Timothy 4:2 (NASB).
  3. Pray for all people
“First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension” 1 Timothy 2:1-8 (NKJV).

This nation will not be won for Christ through court battles or legislation. Jesus did not fight the Romans legal system when He was on earth. This is the reason the Jews didn’t recognize Him as the Messiah. They were looking for a political leader. When Jesus walked on this earth, He preached against sin and preached the gospel message. The only way to win the world is to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. He prayed and preached the gospel. God did not call the church to change the political establishment, rather he called the church to preach the gospel and pray. He is the one to change the political establishment.

The church in America needs to be Revived so their will be a Spiritual Awakening among the lost. Revival can only happen when Christians humble themselves before a holy God. We need to cleanse ourselves so God will hear our prayers for Revival and Spiritual Awakening. If you will be willing to do this, then print out a copy of this Sin List from A-Z. Mark every sin that is yours on this list. If the sin is against God, then confess it directly to Him. If the sin is against another person, then go to him or her and make it right. After you have done this, you will be on praying ground for Revival and Spiritual Awakening. Then pray for all people.
